Background
The Marigny Opera House founded the Marigny Opera House New Dance Festival in
2012, and produced and presented a weekend of new work by four emerging
choreographers, performed to live, acoustic music. The great success of the inaugural
Festival was repeated in 2013, when new work by six local choreographers was
presented. The Festival will be resumed in 2016, organized and directed by Marigny
Opera House directors Dave Hurlbert (Executive Director) and Spencer Doyle (General
Manager).
About the 2016 Festival
Up to six choreographers based in Greater New Orleans will be commissioned to create
original 20-minute dances to be performed to live, acoustic music at the Marigny Opera
House during the weekend of June 9-12, 2016. The choreographers will be selected by
a dance panel of local and national professionals, who will choose at least three and as
many as six choreographers based upon the applicant’s training and experience, as well
the applicant’s overall goals. Most importantly, selections will be made based upon the
applicant’s concept of the piece he/she would create, including the proposed
music/musicians.
The selected choreographers will each receive a stipend of $1,500.00, to cover the fees
and expenses necessary for producing the new works, including choreography, music,
dancers, musicians and costumes. Choreographers will receive half of the stipend upon
signing performance contracts with the Marigny Opera House Foundation, and the
remaining half directly after the final performance of the New Dance Festival on June
12th, 2016.
Selected choreographers will be required to attend a kick-off session with the Directors
directly following their acceptance of the commission. The kick-off session will be
scheduled during the first week of March, 2016. A detailed schedule will be drawn up
during this session, including free rehearsal time as scheduling allows at the Marigny
Opera House.
Assuming that six choreographers have been selected, the new works will be grouped
into two programs for performance. Program A – of three works—will be performed June
9 and 11; Program B on June 10 and 12. Tickets will be sold for all shows, priced at $30
General Admission and $20 Students/Seniors.
