Dancing Grounds is partnering with Junebug Productions to present this FREE and unique workshop with incredible vistiing artist, Marguerite Hemmings (NYC)! The workshop is part Junebug's Power of the Black Feminine series. Experimental DanceHall with Marguerite Hemmings Saturday, March 11 \\ 10:00-11:15am FREE @ NORDC Stallings Center (4300 St. Claude) (NOTE: In place if Work It Out with Laura this week) Experimental Dancehall is a high energy, open dance class that plays with popular music and dances and their cultural context from Jamaica and the African Diaspora (i.e. Haiti, Ghana, Nigeria). All levels welcome. Class starts off with a dance warm-up to popular music from the African diaspora, and will move into improvisational exercises, and ends with a combination we all learn and play with together. About Marguerite: Marguerite Hemmings is a Jamaican born dancer, currently residing in New York. She specializes in street styles, social dances, hip hop, and dancehall, and has been trained in modern and West African. She currently teaches Experimental Dancehall, a term she has coined to capture her love of dancehall/reggae culture, music, and dance as well as movement exploration and improvisation. She was a recipient of the 2015-16 Dancing While Black Fellowship, cofounded a youth empowerment dance intensive, the New York Youth Movement Collaborative and is a teaching artist/artist in residence with University Settlement. She is currently working on a self-directed project called Blacker the Berry, part of a multimedia endeavor called ‘we free’ that explores the millennial generation’s take on liberation which was recently shown at Gibney Dance's Double Plus Series, curated by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, founder of Urban Bush Women.
